Match Report by Ian Fisher

On a wintry, spring day at the Lindum Cricket Ground, we welcomed North Scarle for the first Academy game of the season. Amongst some of the regular faces we were able to give Charlie Swainson and Patrick Basson their first games for the Academy in what looked like it was going to be a great game of cricket and a much needed bank holiday weekend run out.

North Scarle won the toss and elected to bat, something which Captain Kempo was happy with.

Ed and Patrick were the opening bowlers and it was not long before the first wicket was down, Patrick securing his first wicket for Lindum with a devastating tactic of 3 wides and then a straight one! The batsman could hardly prepare for what was coming.

Some very tight bowling kept the score low with North Scarle reaching 48 for 2 after 18 overs.

From this point, some stoic batting from Caveney and Mee for Scarle saw them get to 92 before losing another wicket but some fine bowling from Lindum kept the score after 40 overs down to 145 for the loss of 4 wickets.

Everyone contributed well and on this pitch, that score was well below par and showed the strength of team Lindum were able to put out.

Having already contributed 2 wickets to the cause, Sam Nuttall went out to bat with Jon Begley and were able to score 28 and 44 respectively before losing their wickets, the North Scarle bowlers were very economical and challenged the young and old batsmen alike in the middle overs with Vaughan falling for 7 and Picko going for only 1.

This dangerous spell of bowling from the ‘Badger’ of North Scarle brought together Charlie Jubbs and Oscar Wicks who took to the task of keeping the score moving and punishing the bad balls.

Charlie took the lead and put on 40 before attempting to win the game in one shot, and was very unlucky to not see it out until the end having played a very good innings involving a mixture of power shots and careful gap finding play.

His departure left Oscar and Ed Barnes Heath to see Lindum over the line and with the scores tied at 145, Ed ‘I won’t be long’ Barnes Heath smashed a 4 past mid-on and Lindum avoided the rain and secured victory. Oscar finished on 14 not out showing his promise as a watchful middle order bat and Ed 4 not out.

A game played with good spirits against an experienced North Scarle side could have gone either way on paper but Lindum never looked like the game was out of their control and with only one brief rain delay it was over long before the sun started setting or the worse of the weather came in. We go forward together to the next game against the Old Lincolnians over in Waddington on the 9th May.
