Academy Match Report

The Academy side welcomed Ruston’s to a parched LCG on Sunday and, with the sun and heat, were looking to win the toss. Kempo duly obliged and chose to bat. A look at the wicket and a glance at the fielders and Kempo had one thing on his mind, a nice big total. Kempo opened with young 13 year old Joe Thompson who, in his only previous game for the Academy, was out for a golden duck; could Joe avoid the same fate. Not only did he avoid a duck he did so in grand style……

The two openers made a cautious start playing some solid defensive strokes whilst also playing and missing at a few. There was some interesting calling from Kempo that brought to mind the Vicar of Dibley (Yes, Yes, Yes NOOO!). Joe fought his way through a slightly difficult period, maintaining a focus and concentration that belied his years. Slowly but surely Joe started to play his shots and get some runs on the board with top support from Kempo at the other end talking him through the process. A change of bowlers brought a change of approach from both openers, with both of them increasingly find the gaps in the field and punishing anything slightly short and sending it to the boundary. Joe dug in until the first drinks break and then the second drinks break at 28 overs playing some great shots including an exquisite lofted drive back over the bowlers head for four. Joe reached his maiden fifty with aplomb but still kept his focus, meanwhile Kempo at the other end was doing a sterling job. As Joe kept playing his shots a murmur started around the ground, could something special be on the cards with a century beckoning for this young lad? Another change of bowler, tossing up some delightful pies… surely this was it…. Unfortunately this type of bowling did for young Joe who played on to his wickets for a superb 91 in the 33rd over. The incoming batsmen came and went cheaply as they sought to dispose of juicy, lofted bowling in search of quick runs, with only Harry Wells keeping Kempo company with a nice cameo of 17 (including 2 sixes and a four) before holing out to a full toss. This left Kempo eagerly searching for something special himself with overs running out, but with his next four scoring shots a 2 and two fours he only went and scored a century!!!!. On 106 Kempo was adjudged caught behind whilst attempting a reverse sweep type shot. This left the slow bowler with figures of 5-30! Ian and Heath batted out the last few balls giving Lindum a daunting total of 243 -6.

Rustons' reply got off to a slowish start with Mr Alan claiming an early wicket and Rustons staying behind the run rate. Things kept going at a steady rate with Rustons' opener keeping things ticking over nicely before Gautam snaffled the batsman at the other end LBW for 14. That was the last wicket of the match as new batsman Stuart Silk and the opener began to find the gaps in much the same way as Lindum had earlier in the day. The conditions were warm and there were some tired legs out in the field but everyone kept plugging away. Lindum’s total meant that Kempo could confidently give everyone a bowl and even though Ruston’s increased their run rate it was too little too late as they finished on 184-6, with opener Buick on 65 and Silk 80 not out.

Very much a day for the batsmen but even so the innings of young Joe Thompson will stick in the memory for some time.
