Sunday 1st XI Match Report

The Sunday 1st XI picked up 20 points at Woodhall Spa on Sunday after a 20 run victory. Skipper Rolfs got the day off to a wonderful start by winning the toss and batting, and it was Jack McLagan and the extremely limber Dan Taylor who opened up. Dan adopted the attacker role and whacked a few before being caught for 30, so Jack was joined by man in form Ollie in the middle. He managed to get off the mark for once and he and Jack added a few before the convict was caught behind for 34. Max, Joe P and Jacob then all fell cheaply, leaving Lindum five down and in a spot of bother. Ollie was next to go as he edged to slip for 46, before Picko slapped a honking full toss straight to square leg for 14. The very sober Joe A was out LBW for one, leaving the even more sober Harry Wells to bat the overs out with skipper Rolfs. The two did more than just bat the overs out, adding 49 in the closing overs to guide Lindum to 204-8, which was 50 under-par according to the hosts... Rolfs 37*, Wells 17* and one bruised grill.

A tea which ranked in possibly the top three greatest ever was extended by heavy showers, and when play did restart, it was Woodhall who dominated the early overs as the young openers started well. Jordan did make the breakthrough with Max taking the catch behind the stumps, before the rain came again, and came hard. It looked as though that would be that, however the clouds parted, the sun shone, and play continued at 6:45pm with 32 overs still to bowl. Rolfs and Picko senior came into the attack to rattle through some overs quickly, and it was the skipper who claimed the huge wicket of Woodhall's overseas who edged behind to Max for 0. The village of Woodhall then turned into caught-and-bowled central as four batsmen were dismissed by that method, two by Rolfs and two by optimistic off-spinner Jack, while Jack also took a catch at deep square off Wellsy. Jack claimed another wicket as Jordan took the simple catch on the 45 and suddenly Woodhall were eight wickets down and in trouble with 30 still needed. Wellsy picked up another wicket as Max claimed his third catch behind the stumps, and an identical dismissal was the clincher as Woodhall were bowled out for 184, 20 short of the total at what felt like half an hour short of midnight.
