2nd XI Match Report

A weakened 2nd XI fell to defeat at 'downhill' rivals Hartsholme on Saturday. If the previous week had been like playing in July then this week was like playing in December, in Siberia, as the wind blew and the rain came down. However, the showers came to a halt just in time to allow us to fit in a 30 overs per side game in which Lindum bowled first after skipper Ollie won the toss, unsure of how the weather would progress. Layered up to our eyeballs in thermals and jumpers, Lindum took to the field and made an excellent start with Angus, fresh from last week's six-fer, taking two early wickets; one superbly caught by a back-tracking Harry Wells at mid-off and one clean bowling the number three. Dan Taylor, after beating the outside edge on numerous occasions, got his name in the book as Jack McLagan, who had decided he fancied actually attempting catches this week, took a stunning one-handed diving catch to remove the other opener. 25-3 and Lindum were in the driving seat. However, this brought together Hartsholme's dangerous middle order pair. After riding their luck early on with several Chinese cuts and a number of aerial shots in the gaps, they began to get comfortable and cashed in on the seamers and young spin attack, bowling in the most unfavourable young leg-spinner conditions imaginable. The two added over 100 before young Pranav, already maxing out on his fine before the game even started by rocking up in his whites, made the breakthrough as Jack took the catch off the top edge from an attempted sweep. The combination of the bowling of Harry Wells, who finally found his radar after a first over wider than the Thames, and Grant Watkins in the field brought two quickfire wickets. Angus came back into the attack and finally removed the dangerous overseas, Wellsy taking another smart catch at long-on, before Gus earned his second consecutive five wicket haul by clean bowling numbers eight and nine. The hosts finished on 184-9 from the 30 overs - too many, after being 30-3 off 10.

To save time and attempt to beat the rain, which never actually returned, we were straight around and batting 10 minutes later. Openers Jack and Aidan started cautiously, hoping to emulate the hosts in the knowledge that we had batting to come. The two guided us to 34, before Jack clipped one off his pads straight to mid-wicket who made no mistake with the catch. Ollie was in at 3 and with the rate increasing, attempted to push the rate along with some, erm, swings. Aidan was caught at gully for 11 and the ball flew off largely the edges of Ollie's bat before he was stumped for 22.75-3. Debutant Joe Chickenpox Atkinson and Grant added 30 before the latter was bowled for 15, and after some nice sweeps in particular, Joe was given LBW for 44. Angus was caught off the final ball of the innings for 12, leaving Dan on 2* and Lindum on 137-6, a defeat of 47 runs. An admirable chase, but the game was lost in the field. We go again next week at home to Cherry!
