2nd XI Match Report

A pieced together 2nd XI suffered a defeat at the hands of Cherry Willingham on Saturday after a staggering batting collapse. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat on a surface which played far better than it looked. It took Lindum a while to get in the groove in the field, with the first wicket falling with the score on 83, Dewy clean bowling the half-centurion opener shortly after the 17-over drinks break. Matt Pickering was then brought into the attack, and his pace was clearly too much to handle as the number three snicked behind to Max who took a fine catch behind the stumps. 94-2. A third wicket partnership of 62 frustrated Lindum, but it was finally brought to an end as Max claimed his second scalp with the gloves off the bowling of Jordan. George then earned his first bowl, and wicket, in Lindum colours as his delivery was slapped straight to Pricey at mid-wicket who took the catch centimetres from the ground. Ted was then kept busy in the field, taking a couple of skyers, firstly off Jordan and then off the rankest of long-hops from George. Jordan then did the same off Dewy to claim the seventh and final wicket - the score finished on 214-7 from the 50 overs. A better fielding display would've arguably kept it under 200.

Lindum's chase got off to a solid start, despite the early wicket of George who was caught at slip for eight with the score on 18. Ollie went in at three and he and Pricey, particularly Pricey, knocked it around nicely to seamlessly take the score to 100-1 in the 17th over. However, it was all too good to be true as, when Pricey smacked a delivery down long-off's throat, the collapse began. Pricey's departure sparked raucous scenes at the drinks break, with Matt Picko emerging as 'peace-maker' after a bit of harmless chat between Pricey and the Cherry lads. Always first on the scene when it bubbles over is, Picko. Could tell he was itching to throw a punch. Anyway, back to the collapse. 100-2 became 100-3 when Knowlesy was out LBW on the sweep for 0... 100-3 became 100-4 when Ollie was bowled for 24 (including the seventh six of his career I'll have you know)... 100-4 became 100-5 when Picko was given LBW for his sins... and 100-5 became 100-6 when a full straight one went underneath Ted's bat. A quite remarkable collapse meant the game had turned on its head in the space of 10 minutes. Max and debutante Louie Sadler did well to stem the flow of wickets, adding 33 before Louie fell for a very commendable 20. Max was then caught at long-off for 19, Jordan was given LBW for five and nigh-on disabled Kempo's slog sweep was plucked from the air by the diving mid-wicket as Lindum were bowled out for 157 in the 38th over. We go again next week.
