2nd XI Match Report

The 2nd XI's winning run came to an abrupt end at Barton Town on Saturday. Skipper Benno lost the toss and Lindum were asked to bowl first on a good but 'something in it for the bowlers' track. Angus made the most of being handed the new rock after Dan's spikes misplacement, clean bowling one of the openers in his first over. He then took two more in quick succession, with two edges finding their way to Pickerings Euan and Matt and wicketkeeeper and slip. The Pickering show was halted for the fourth wicket as Dewy joined the party, removing Barton's dangerous number four LBW first ball to restrict them to 48-4 after 15 overs. The turning point in the match came not long after, when Barton's number six was agonisingly dropped at mid-off off a low full toss from Angus. He would go on to make an unbeaten century, dropped from relatively difficult chances another five times on the way. Meanwhile, after Dan had realised his spikes were in fact in his kit bag of all places, he took wickets four and five - one LBW, one an ugly swipe which found its way down to Gus at third man. This left Barton on 70-6, and the seventh wicket also came courtesy of Dan when the batsman edged to Euan behind the stumps, who took the extremely nonchalant one handed catch. However, Lindum failed to finish off the tail as Barton's number nine somehow made 37 before he was caught by Ollie off Dewy, before Dan clean bowled their number nine. The number six rode his luck to reach his ton in the final over, guiding Barton to an irritating 223-9.

Aidan and Matt Picko, both due a score, opened up for Lindum in the chase. Picko offered the bowler all his loose change, a button and a pack of midget gems but it seems he just can't buy a run for any price at the minute as he was removed for a duck in the second over. This brought Ollie, also due a score, in at number three. After a brief partnership, Aidan left one which was a little too close for comfort as the ball nipped back and cannoned into his off peg as he went for 18. Ollie then performed a miracle and made it into double figures, but that was all it was as he was bowled for 10 shortly after Aidan. Angus suffered the same fate the very next ball and, despite the game situation and Gus' obvious dismay, his very vocal reaction on return to the dressing room was a bit funny. Just a little bit. Tom Lea survived the hattrick ball and few more after that despite taking flack from all corners of the Barton field for his earlier mishap, but he was eventually bowled for 10. Dan was in at seven and, after a lovely straight drive ALONG THE GROUND I'll have you know, he was caught behind in the over before drinks, leaving Euan in dismay at the non strikers end. Wellsy was next to go for two after perfectly picking out the short cover fielder, before Euan's resistance finally came to an end after he was bowled for 35 by one that 'stopped in the pitch'. A beautiful father-son moment was shared on his return to the pavilion, as Matt helpfully pointed out the ball hadn't in fact 'stopped' in the pitch, or it wouldn't have actually gone on to hit the stumps. Euan was most grateful to be corrected. Dewy was next to go for a decent 15, before Max was last man to fall for 25 when the ump decided he'd had enough for the day and gave Max out caught down the leg side despite his bat being in a different timezone to the ball. Benno was 12 not out as Lindum were bowled out for 147, an amount which likely wouldn't have been needed if we'd held the many spurned chances.
